I've been 5 times to Guangxi and each time find something new that amazes me. I really enjoyed Yangshou (including Moon mountain and the cave mud baths and Li River trip!), Beihai, Guilin and of course Nanning. I also did a trip to the mountains in the NorthEast of the province and saw some amazing views and also a trip to the dragonback rice fields (can't recall the name of the village) where the women keep their hair very long.
Can't wait to return.

In my wife's arms (In case she ever reads this ) I liked Behai, the surf and the seafood, but the river cruise in Guilin and the surrounding caves was nice too. Really anything that has Chinese history (the older the better) really grabs my attention.

That reminds me. About 6 years ago I visited a small old village that had a 500 year old stone bridge and for the life of me cannot remember its name. It had a farm nearby where you chose the chicken for dinner and while it was being dispatched you went and picked the veg to go with it - all then cooked in front of you (they also did free range dog).

Agree about the seafood in BeiHai, best I've ever tasted. Great sunsets where the locals come out to enjoy the surf once the heat has died down.

We have ben to Guilin and Beihai-both have their different qualities-on balance I prefer Guilin. Don't really know why but I think the atmosphere in Guilin is fresher. Does anybody know if there is a Guilin info site similar to ours??

My favorite place in China is Yangshou.Mainly because this is where my wife was born.Actually a village called Qing Ping about 1 hour away from Yangshou. When we go there we meet up with all her family. Her cousin owns the book shop and small hotel in West Street.Speaks perfect English. Her parents live in Nanning but we all go together to Yangshou for family get togethers. You talk about the round table, this is several round tables.Always seems new cousins, uncles etc appear from nowhere. But we all have a great time with this Englishman sat in the middle trying to answer their questions.
Yangshou has the most freshest air that I know of in China as I been to many places that do not share this.Wu Yi Shan is another place which is worth a visit. It is in the Fujian Province.Wonderful scenery, fresh air, good food, lovely people. We went there on my wife's company meeting.I would go again. There are many places that have their own little nicities.

By far the best trip I went on, was to Tongling Grand Canyon, Jingxi County, Guangxi. It is 30 kms further north than Detian waterfalls, but you could visit both scenic spots in the same trip. Detian is a very poor relation to what you will see at Tongling.
We descended 200 metres down Tongling Canyon, so you need to be fit, the way out involves climbing 6 or 700 steps. A waterfall of great height pours over a cliff and disappears down the canyon. Tongling Grand Canyon is more than 10 kms long. We walked over a hill and down into the next valley between the karst limestone hills, similar to the ones at Guilin and occurring all across Guangxi. At the bottom we boarded inflatable dinghies and drifted downstream through cave systems before emerging at the road, where our coach was waiting. It was spectacular and the only access route between the hills was via the river or hacking your way through the tropical forests. It is remote and unspoilt and many rare plants are found there. I really felt I had been back to nature whereas Guilin and Yangshuo are just overrun with tourists, thieves and hawkers.

Hi All

I travelled to Yangshuo I February and enjoyed the stay despite the temperature. I would recommend it as a good place to start with holidaying in China because so many of the hotel staff speak English. The only drawback for a newcomer is the trip from the Guilin airport to Yangshuo. Must organise this through a hotel to make sure you are not ripped off. West Street for a foreigner is like a sideshow shooting gallery for a line of ducks. You are targeted for a sale. Still I was able to buy some silk at about two thirds what they were asking for. The local price is less than half what they ask from foreigners. After a while West Street becomes stressful to walk down as every stall holder calls out hullo to every foreigner and shoeshine people and postcard sellers are at you all the time. The scenery has an ethereal feel to it. The market is worth a visit as it has not been changed for some time. I also did a cooking class or two with a cooking school.
